The who, what and how...
Your frequently asked questions
Who can apply for the Kickstart Scheme?
The Kickstart Scheme job placements are funded using a grant agreement. There are rules around who grants can be paid to any organisation, regardless of size, can apply for funding. New guidance advises that the scheme is currently only open to Limited companies or registered Charities who have submitted at least one set of accounts.
Checks are required to confirm that your organisation is established, reputable and financially solvent.
You are more likely to be approved if you have:
- Have an established trading history
- Regularly and recently submitted accounts
- A credit score in a low risk category
- A low probability of imminent business failure
- Enough liquid assets to pay your debts
- No recent county court judgments (CCJs)
These factors are taken into consideration when assessing your Kickstart Scheme application, however failing on one or more of these does not necessarily mean your application will not be approved.
What does the grant cover?
Ongoing grant payments will cover:
- 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage depending on the age of the participant) for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months
- Associated employer National Insurance contributions
- Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions
- A one-off £1,500 payment per job placement should be used for setup costs and to support the young person develop their employability skills.
What conditions are there for job placements?
There is no minimum threshold for the number of placements you create. The job placements created with Kickstart Scheme funding must however be new jobs. They must not:
- Replace existing or planned vacancies
- Cause existing employees or contractors to lose or reduce their employment
You can currently create job placements that begin up to the end of December 2021. Once a job placement is created, it can be taken up by a second person once the first successful applicant has completed their 6-month term.
How do I apply?
To begin the process, complete the form on this page and a member of our team will contact you at the earliest opportunity. They will then explain the 1-step process which requires the following information about your organisation:
- The Companies House reference number or Charity Commission number
- The organisation address and contact details
- Details of the job placements and their location. Initially just the job title
- Supporting information to show that the job placements are new jobs and meet the Kickstart Scheme criteria
- Information about the support the organisation can give to develop employability skills of young people
Your application will be reviewed to check it meets the requirements of the Kickstart Scheme. It will then go to a panel for consideration. This is not a competitive process, but Kickstart will only provide funding when the job placements meet the criteria. The DWP aims to respond to applications within one month.
